Biomaterial Playground: Engaging with Bio-based Materiality
Awards: Interactivity Popular Choice Honorable Mention Award at ACM CHI’22
People: Fiona Bell, Netta Ofer, Hyelin Choi, Ella McQuaid, Ethan Frier, and Mirela Alistar
Year: 2021-2022
Description: In this demo, we introduce the HCI community to a collection of sustainable biomaterials that the Living Matter Lab uses to create interactive interfaces. These biomaterials included ReClaym, a clay-like material made from compost; Alganyl, an algae-based bioplastic; Dinoflagellates, bioluminescent algae; SCOBY, symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast; and Spirulina, nutrient-dense blue-green algae. We use this demo to call attention to the importance of care, patience, and understanding when designing with biomaterials.
